Touch your points

Pain existed since the beginning of the creation. Neanderthal suffered all the kinds of pains that we are suffering today: Headache, toothache, stomachache…etc. But he did not have the choice of medicines that we have today. So, he suffered a lot, he tried his best to alleviate his pain and the natural reaction for him, like us, was to press the spot that he felt pain in. This reduced the pain somehow. Ancient people noticed such phenomena and worked to discover the sources of pain and how to reduce it without using herbal treatments, because they did not have access to such treatments yet. They managed to put a full map of the human body and to locate the critical spots that could heal dieses or reduce pains!

During the last 20 years humans discovered the dangerous side effects of chemical therapy and many of them has adopted the new treatment of ‘reducing pains with massage’ or what is now called: Reflexology.

What is Reflexology?

In general, reflexologists believe that the act of applying pressure to various reflex points results in a reduction of stress which, in turn, promotes positive physiological changes within the body. Among other things, reflexology sessions are thought to improve the functioning of the circulatory system, allowing nutrients to flow throughout the body more efficiently. As a result of reflexology procedures the process of elimination works better; constipation is relieved and excess wastes in the system are eliminated

It is the practice of applying pressure to the feet and hands utilizing specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil, cream or lotion based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change in the body.

What could reflexology do to us?

*Creates relaxation: From the moment the reflexologist starts his work, the relaxation begins.

*Reduces pain: Pain reduction following reflexology work is granted and it helps so much.

*Ameliorates health concerns: Research shows that reflexology treatment helps individuals of all ages with some 78 health concerns ranging from aggressive behavior in children to urinary concerns of the elderly.

*Improves blood flow: reflexology treatment increases blood flow to the feet, brain, kidneys and intestines.

*Aids post-operative recovery: Reflexology treatment aids recovery after surgery it reduces pain and lessens the use of post operative analgesics.

*Impacts on physiological measures.

*Enhances medical care: Reflexology helps where nothing else can for many: phantom limb pain sufferers, neuropathy patients, and hem dialysis patients to name a few.

*Benefits mental health: reflexology can reduce depression and anxiety.

In order to do a reflexology massage you may need to get some tips:

Do it in a pleasant atmosphere – Pleasant surrounding may add some extra benefits and relaxation to the reflexology treatment. So during reflexology session it is suggested to; play a gentle relaxing music and burn aroma oil/candle, apply a gentle pressure using your thumbs or fingers or any soft subject on the feet, palms or ears just apply it on the needed area of the organs that you wish to treat it ( as you  see in the chart ).

The typical session should take 45-50 minutes and it is preferred to be 5-6 times weekly, if you need more sessions feel free to do them because they have no bad side effects, by the way there is no known unwanted side effects are reported so far you might feel weakness, sleepiness, and frequent urination.

You can easily provide reflexology massage frequently and consistently by yourself, using self applied massages to remove the stress patterns in your feet and hands. Apply pressure by using a foot roller for foot and any hard small ball for the hands. You can do reflexology even while on your regular activities. For example have a foot roller under your desk at work and practice to roll it with foot with some pressure, roll a hard small ball on your hands while waiting someone.

Reflexology treatment begins with gentle relaxation techniques followed by applying pressure to each of the reflex points, close the eyes and relax.

Here in Syria we have many instruments that we can use to apply the reflexology as magnetic slippers, special thick socks, special hair brushes that contain some picks on the back side, or you can buy the Chinese small electric massagers and apply your massages, because we don’t have a professional clinics neither reflexologies to work the right massages on feet, palms, or ears at the end I hope you can practice and work your own massages to heal yourself and save your money.

  1. I agree with you. Reflexotherapy is a benefit . I learned it and practised it on close people around me and it always worked. Not that difficult but useful indeed. Congratulations for the article.
