Tartus, the cradle of civilizations

Its name was Entrados at the time of Phoenicians. It became Tartoza with the arrival of the Byzantines. It was a main a military base and it contained many ancient castles and fortes. The remnants of the arches, walls and towers remind us of the narrow avenues and of the history of Tartus in the middle ages with its sophisticated architectural heritage. But the most important monument that still stands tall and graceful is the cathedral of Tartus, which has become a museum of the city that includes a wide range of magnificent architectural pieces of art of all ages.

The beach of Tartus is the southern extension of the Syrian boarders; this soft sand beach is surrounded by many public coffee shops with very low prices and restaurants that offer great tasty sea food.
Tartus is characterized by the beauty of its nature, surrounded by green mountains and forests, wonderful beaches and tourist villages. Resorts are spread in different areas of the province.

The province of Tartus is linked with the surrounding cities and towns with a modern network of highways, roads and railway lines.

Geographically, Tartus is located at the confluence of longitude 35 degrees 52 minutes 30 seconds. Latitude, 33 degrees 30 minutes 30 seconds. This provides a mild atmosphere of the Mediterranean on the coast and a low temperate and cool atmosphere for the highlands, rainy winter on the coast with snow on the Highlands.

Tartus is the southern part of the waterfront’s western Syria beach, a length of 90 km from the Lebanese border in the south to the north and the( Al-seen) River several islands scattered in front of the beach  (Arwad, ants Abbas, Abu Ali) the populated island is Arwad island, 5 KM far from the city and 2.5 from the beach.

Tartus has many coastal plains such a Akkar plain 16 km depth, it was the right place for the Amorites, and Phoenicians to settle there. The depth decreases to 4 km at Baniyas city, west of the Al- markab castle. Many archeological sites are scattered within the provenience, between the mountains and the coast, Tartus is the place that hosted the greatness of Ardos , Lamoureux, Osnato and Amrit civilizations.

Tartus has great and many archeological sites such as; Al- Qadmous Castle, Cave Castle, Al-Marqab Castle,  Yahmour Castle, Al- Khawabi Castle, Al-Ulaika castle, Om Housh castle, Aeryma Castle, Arwad Castle, Mier Tower, Safita Tower, the Church of Samakah, ancient city of Amrit,Pino Khikhy
(Solomon Fort), Taratos ancient city, Mantar hill, , Aldwayat cave, the cathedral of Tartus, Albandara, Osno, hill of the Hippocampus River, Ghamqh hill , Samaraan hill , Mriqbh hill, Ancient city of Carna, Ras Al-nabe’a cemeteries, Alqasomah Cave, and  Cave of the House of the valley.



City of Safita:

A beautiful mountain town characterized by its urban development and surrounded by great natural views it has a huge archaeological tower which mediates the city, it has excellent hotels and all tourist services. The most famous places to visit in Safita are:

Mashtal Al hellw:

One of the famous summer resorts in Syria, 55 Km, away from Tartus, It has many hotels, restaurants and rest houses, in addition to a wonderful mild summer. In winter snow covers it. Mashtal Al hellw is nothing but a great resort for winter and summer.

Draykish village:

35 km from Tartus, have a mountain atmosphere, cool breeze and stunning views, mineral water springs and many parks are positioned beside Qayess River between the mountains, famous for its natural mineral water spring: Draykish.

Sheikh Badr:

The major city in the province of Tartus, it contains a lot of historic areas; it is the city of the Syria leader Sheikh Saleh Al-li, who fought against the French occupation.


The second main city in the province, located on the sea, it has a great view from Al-Marqab castle, Banias has many historic sites it is surrounded by forests and green mountains and it has great beautiful soft coasts.

Arwad Island:

Located opposite to the city of Tartous, a wonderful historic island, used to be called (Erados), it contains several castles and a museum, it used to be a famous Kingdom that controlled a large part of the Syrian coast, it contains many ancient Shipyards, has many resorts, restaurants and shops for selling souvenirs.

You can have some nice time in mountains or you can visit the ancient sites which can take you far away in the past to live the life of the ancient magnificent civilizations, or you can just stick to the sea and have some coffee or tea and spend your time swimming. This summer the people of Tartus are offering cheap and attractive prices for everything: Hotels, food, drinks and chalets in order to encourage the people of Syria to travel and to support Syrian economy and to revive the country after the past sad few months.
